Elizabeth A. Wade "There is no separation between environmental matters and human matters; they are truly interdependent and interconnected. If one is to examine environmental issues, she cannot afford to ignore the cultural, political, economic, and social conditions that are exacerbated by or lead to environmental crises. " "As I have come to find out, environmental issues do not stand alone on isolated islands of independence. Rather, they are always fraught with grander issues linked to politics, economics, cultural and moral ideologies, and social standing." A Cape Cod native and graduate of Barnstable High School, Elizabeth Wade is currently pursuing an interdisciplinary academic concentration at Hampshire College by integrating health, environmental, and anthropological components of study. Her initial attention to environmental issues grew from her interests in sustainable agriculture and environmental health. These interests, in turn, were also fostered by Liz's involvement with environmentally minded political groups during high school. After she graduates from Hampshire College in two years, she has tentative plans to travel with service organizations to assist disenfranchised populations affected by environmentally related health maladies. Her geographic interest in Central and South America has spawned past trips to countries such as El Salvador, and will most likely lead to future ventures in Latin America. In the distant future, she plans to enroll in a Master of Public Health program. Liz is driven by her desire to create equitable conditions across lines of race, class, gender, culture and geography, and by the need to examine complex problems through interdisciplinary lenses. |
